"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary."
-Henry Louis Mencken (1880-1956)

Well folks, have we yet learned to recognize ye olde hobgoblin when he arrives in each new disguise?
We've been enduring a real nasty one worldwide for some time now...

I gave Carl Sagan and company subdued praise for debunking the nuclear arms hobgoblin so eloquently and publicly in the last of his 13 episodes of Cosmos, even though I was disappointed that he didn't go far enough to debunk the formula for hobgoblins and keep us vigilant for whichever ones might come next. I won't repeat here the exact tips and warnings I talked about then; they're all still easily accessed on my review for
"Cosmos 13: Who Speaks for Earth?" [Cultural Leadership and Wisdom].

I will say that the formula doesn't actually care if the hobgoblin is real or imaginary; it can work just as well either way. The true goal of the formula is a great signal that will give its game away... It will ask you to give up your rights and freedoms.

Know your hobgoblin formula, and how to say no to it.

Spock completes an epic transformation as Leonard Nimoy guest stars on Star Trek The Next Generation - a story with many outstanding highlights but which does not fully exploit the potential of its cross-over concept and is partially drowned in padding and filler.

Review: "Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock"

This second helping of the essence of the previous film organically advances the story and the characters, succeeding with a more personal focus. But thematically, charisma promotes a few false wisdoms, failing to challenge entrenched storytelling policies that deserve to be re-thought.

Review: "Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country"
