Face of the Enemy

Here we have another favourite season six episode, which succeeds as a thriller catapulted into motion with a very memorable, shocking revelation for one of our regulars.

There is room in this one for better philosophies to triumph over lesser ones, but the story never does quite line up all its cards correctly for that. The narrative will have to settle for satisfying as a thriller more than anything else.

But the episode has quite a lot going for it in other ways. One big bonus is the amount of screen time spent off ship, which features good production design for the tale's more unique elements. Of course, this is Troi's story, so she gets most of that to herself today. But we see her having to really stretch, and call upon aspects of herself that she would rarely get to demonstrate. In fact, the promotion that she is seen to struggle for next year seems to be more easily and demonstrably earned here. I'm sure many fans like me enjoyed seeing this rare side of Troi in this episode.

A good helping of production value from many departments seems to have also helped boost this episode above many of its neighbours. Indeed, for years I drew attention to this episode mostly because the music very noticeably rose above the usual boring bland washes of orchestral chords, and actually contributed to the excitement of the story. Credits revealed that composer Don Davis had made his debut on the show. Good job! This episode is a good example of what a television composer can do before having the creativity berated out of them to the disappointment of Trek fans everywhere. I gladly bought the original music tracks from this story on CD when they became available, something I can't often say about most of the McCarthy/Chattaway scores from the same era. Liner notes revealed that this is indeed the same Don Davis that went on to score the Matrix trilogy.

My favourite bits include the cue "N'Vek Nervosa", and pretty much everything from Act 5 which featured wall-to-wall musical underscore. The compelling pulse of tension building throughout these sections added good energy to the story.
